Resources to Support our
Transition to Common Core

https://sites.google.com/a/cesa11.k12.wi.us/gsd/home/math
We are using this URL to keep track of our curriculum work and resources for the 14-15 school year.

We are implementing the Common Core State Standards as our new math curriculum.  It is important to continue  to revisit the standards and build your understanding of each standard and the processes that are needed to support mastery.

There is a lot to absorb in the CCSS document, We recommend starting with the Standards for Mathematical Practice, which are:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

NCSM has created power Professional Learning Modules which illustrate the Standards which I highly recommend, the time you spend exploring these will help you to understand the expectations of the CCSS, please visit their website:  NCSM Illustrating the Standards for Mathematical Practice

The Mathematics Assessment Project has available summative tests or tasks as well as classroom challenges that support the Common Core both in content and practice.  Check out the tasks to get a better understanding of the way students will be asked to demonstrate their mastery of the content:  Mathematics Assessment Project

A site which provides "learning trajectories" for the Math CCSS is Turnonccmath.com
This site is a great resource to help you understand how the mathematical content standards build upon and support one another.  This resource is worth your time to examine!

Grantsburg School District
Math Philosophy

The mathematics program of the School District of Grantsburg is committed to enabling all students to become mathematical problem solvers, to reason and communicate mathematically, to become confident in their ability to do mathematics, and to value mathematics.

Central to our philosophy is the empowerment of all students regardless of gender, ability, race, and/or ethnicity – to recognize the need for mathematics and to use mathematics in their world.  This will prepare all students for the further study of mathematics and to be personally and professionally competent in meeting the needs of our rapidly changing information age.

We believe that students must be actively involved in doing mathematics and constructing their own knowledge by interacting with the physical world, other students, and adults.  We will utilize methods of instruction which…

  • Pose questions and tasks that engage and challenge each student’s thinking.
  • Use an investigative approach to problem solving.
  • Utilize concrete materials.
  • Engage student in both oral and written communication about mathematics.
  • Use technology effectively and appropriately.
  • Encourage students to work cooperatively.
  • Integrate mathematical ideas in other curricular areas.

The assessment of students must be an integral part of learning. It must be designed to reflect what students know and how they think.  Assessment must include the skills and concepts of mathematics and also demonstrate how these skills are used through mathematical reasoning, communications, and problem solving.

Our math program is in keeping with the mathematical standards established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Wisconsin’s Mathematics Academic Standards.
